Nobody enjoys asking this question, because the answer always starts with “it depends.” That is true, but it is also a lazy place to stop. You are trying to work out whether to budget ten thousand dollars or twenty-five, and a shrug does not help.
So here are real numbers for Edmonton in 2026, followed by the specific things that move them. Read the ranges first, then read why your roof might sit at one end or the other.

If a quote lands far outside those bands, that is not automatically wrong, but it is worth a question. A number well below the range usually means something has been left out of the scope. A number well above it should come with a clear reason attached, and a good roofer will happily give you one.
The five things that actually move the price
Roof pricing is not mysterious. Almost all of the variation between two quotes on the same house comes down to these:
- Size and pitch. Steeper roofs are slower and need more safety setup, so labour climbs even when the square footage does not.

There is a version of a roof that looks finished from the driveway and fails in four years. It is cheaper because things were skipped, and the things that get skipped are the ones you cannot see from the ground.
Ice and water membrane in the valleys and along the eaves. Proper flashing where the roof meets a wall or chimney. Correct ventilation. New vents and boots instead of reusing brittle ones. Full tear-off instead of shingling over the old roof to save a day of labour.
None of that is visible when the crew drives away. All of it decides whether the roof lasts twenty years or leaks by the third spring melt.
How to get a number you can actually trust
Ask for the quote in writing, itemised. It should name the shingle and underlayment being installed, say whether it is a tear-off, state what happens if rotten decking turns up, and spell out the cleanup and the warranty.
